The Big Three

The Department of Veterans Affairs explains that there are primarily three mental health problems that you may encounter serving in the military. They include:

Depression

Sometimes in today’s society, an individual struggling with depression is often stereotyped as weak, and that they just need to “suck it up” to improve their lives. Unfortunately, nearly every case of depression is not a condition that the person can make the simple decision to “suck it up” and get over their problems.

Moderate to severe forms of depression are considered by professionals as a mental health disorder that directly impedes and causes complications in daily life and affects the brain’s normal functioning. Many of these instances that develop in veterans’ lives require proper guidance and treatment to ensure the least amount of impact on their life. JAMA Psychiatry conducted a study in 2014 that concluded that veterans’ depression rate is nearly five times higher than that of civilians.

Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, is typically the result of a significant powerful blow to the head or body. There are many adverse side effects and symptoms that occur during the aftermath of this type of injury, including:

  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness and body fatigue
  • Frequent loss of memory
  • Sudden mood changes and sometimes intense mood swings

PTSD

Military combat sequences, verbal or physical assault, and experiencing other trauma-causing disasters have been proven to produce long-term adverse effects. The most popular being:

  • Insomnia
  • Anger
  • Frequent nightmares
  • Being “jumpy”
  • Development of substance use disorders

When these side-effects continue and do not appear to be improving, the chances are good that post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD has developed. The same JAMA Psychiatry study in 2014 found that the rates of PTSD being diagnosed are nearly 15 times greater with veterans than it is with the rest of the civilian population.

The Impact of Deployments

The institute of Medicine, or IOM, has published articles stating that the most common psychological challenges that both our active-duty military service members, veterans, and their families see play out in their lives include:

  • Feeling overwhelming anxious and depressive emotions relating to their recent or upcoming military deployment.
  • Fears from the rest of the family regarding the safety and mental health care of their loved one.
  • Constant worry caused because of the children that are involved and the many duties related to being a responsible and loving parent during or after a deployment.

The Army Gold Book indicates that since the year 2012, approximately 56 percent of all men and women veteran service member spouses had reported experiencing stress in one degree or another. Nearly half of those military member spouses claimed to have worried a great deal about their financial situations, with the majority of them claiming that hey only had $500 or less total throughout their savings accounts. Lastly, close to 19 percent of spouses to military personnel admitted to participating in behavioral health or marital counseling.
